5k for Kalama!

I've been editing pictures lately (really, I have) to get ready for some very overdue posts but in the meantime something else has my attention and it is this: the 5k for Kalama that is being run on October 4, 2014 in Mendon Ponds, NY! Erin Hanlon is the organizer of this event that sponsors the Kalama Project. I've included a bit from their website next:

"In June, 2009 we began a mission project with Kalama, Kenya.  Kalama is the hometown of Father Dominic Munini who had been in residence at St. Mary’s in Canandaigua, NY for five years as he completed a Bachelor’s degree in biology from St. John Fisher College and a Masters at SUNY Brockport.
Father Dominic outlined three critical needs in his village:
  • Potable Water
  • Access to Education for High School and College Aged Youth
  • Access to Health Care
The money raised has made such a dramatic difference in the lives of over 1,200 residents of Kalama.  For the first time, the women and children no longer need to walk two miles each way to the river to hand-carry polluted water into their village which was not safe to drink or cook with."
The money raised from this 5k goes 100% to continue the support begun over 5 years ago.

If you're interested in joining us at this event, or even interested in volunteering on the day of (see Erin's email on the link), check out this page and register online here!

When you register you're guaranteed a fun time (obviously) but also, first come first served on the remaining t-shirts and then if you get top 3 in your age group you can look forward to the cinch bag on the right as a prize!

Wondering what the course looks like? Check it out:

To look at a more interactive map, click here and enjoy! It's got some hills but what's a workout if not challenging? In fact, as you're running (or walking) through the grass and hills you can take solace in the fact that there are a few dozen boys in Machakos, Kenya running a 5k with us in solidarity!

Hope to see a lot of you there!
